It’s all about BIGGER curls

Now is the time to talk about spring trends for 2023. Bigger, voluminous curls and waves are back in a big way, from big mermaid waves to shaggy bobs, and we couldn’t be happier about it. And while celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Zendaya opted for reds last year, enhancing your natural tone with shades of coppery auburn will continue to trend into spring.

HOW TO CARE FOR CURLY HAIR

Having curly/textured hair is a blessing and a curse! However, if you haven’t learned yet, the best way to take care of our curls is to not treat it the same as straight hair.

TOP 4 TIPS:

1. WE CAN’T WASH OUR HAIR AS OFTEN

Since everyone’s scalp and hair is different, as a rule of thumb, we suggest going at least a couple days in between washes. Most scalps should be oily by the time you go to shampoo. An oily scalp and hair does not mean dirty.

2. ONLY USE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS

Generally speaking, you want to avoid any products that are too heavy and don’t enhance your natural hair. You also want to avoid any products that are going to dry it out and/or pull out your texture.

3. RECEIVE REGULAR TRIMS AND SHAPING

By removing split and dead ends, you’re going to keep the ends of your curls from thinning out. Thin curls look scraggly, frazzled and are more prone to tangles.

4. USE A DIFFUSER

Diffuse your hair upside down and flip from side to side to get volume. You also shouldn’t be holding the diffuser in one spot longer than 4-6 seconds to avoid frizz. After your hair is dry, you can take a pick and pull up your hair to create even more volume. I like to put a bit of oil on my hands and scrunch it through the curls, separating any big clumps of curls, which will also create bigger hair.

In winter our hair and scalp tend to test our patience and be extra dry. Curly hair is already less hydrated than straight hair so in these cold months we have to take extra time to hydrate and nourish our scalps! A couple tips to help at home with this in the winter is to use a hydrating masque once a week and sleep with a silk bonnet or pillowcase to lock in overnight treatments and products we’re using for that hydration.

An in-salon service to help with dry scalp this winter is a hair treatment using Aveda’s new Scalp Solutions line. This service starts with a gentle scalp exfoliation that removes buildup and flakes, then moves into a refreshing shampoo and conditioning treatment that helps protect your scalp from environmental aggressors and future build up. You can come in for this service alone or add it onto any other hair service.

We know how frustrating it is to not have the right products that work for you, so we invite you to come in and get your curls shaped and hydrated. We can talk over everything you’re doing at home and make sure your curls on the right track.

Whether you are interested in trying a bold, new look, or just experimenting with some new layers or warmer tones this spring, there is a glamorous new version of you waiting to be seen in 2023. We can’t wait to help you look and feel your best.
